Finding the Best Retailer for Your Product

A major part of your success in licensing is finding the right retailer(s) for your licensed products, which can be intimidating for beginners.

One of the major details in the licensing contract you sign with the licensor (see Chapter 6) specifies where you can distribute your products at retail. Locating retailers within the parameters of your contract is up to you.

Most new licensees are already product manufacturers and add licensing to help sell more of their products. If this describes you, then you likely already have a retail distribution strategy in place for your product(s). In this case, reach out to your current retail partner to share the idea of adding a license to your current product. In most cases, retailers love carrying well-known brands that consumers trust, and they understand that their customers may be willing to pay a premium for these products. They also know that branded products typically have a higher sell-through than other products, which results in higher sales for the retailers.
